A Cup of Cold Water -Mathew 10:40

Lady of Light

I am thinking about hospitality and receiving people. Jesus speaks of this in Mathew 10 40-42:

"He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in he name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive rigteous man's reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward."

This speaks to me about being gracious to people and receiving them and that even if you can only do a small act of kindness such as giving a cup of water to a thirsty child, this is important in God's sight. Sometimes it is the small kindnesses that make a real difference in life. The other day, my husband and I were walking to the store - we have a lot of snow and ice right now. A stranger - a woman who was on her way to church - stopped and helped my husband across the slippery parking lot. We were ever so grateful and it just made us feel that God is caring for us through other people.

In terms of receiving - this word is used frequently in this passage - when you receive Jesus Christ as your personal Savior - when you receive God's love and the many blessings He has for you, it makes it much easier to receive others in a gracious and loving manner. I will ask God to keep me open to the opportunities he has for me to receive others and do kindnesses and demonstrate His love - the love that I have received from him.

God Bless you and have a great day!

Wait Patiently for God

Lady of Light

One of my biggest problems is lack of patience - I want immediate answers and solutions to everything. Taking a cue from the Psalmist David, I finally realized that waiting is a spiritual exercise that we must adapt to. In Psalm 40, David says:

"I waited patiently for the Lord,
And He inclined to me,
And heard my cry,
He also brought me out of a horrible pit,
Out of the miry clay,
And set my feet upon a rock,
And established my steps.
He has put a new song in my mouth -
Praise to our God,
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the Lord."

This section of the Psalm is very encouraging in terms of what God does - he hears and delivers and puts a new song in David's mouth. He sets feet on a rock and establishes his steps. It makes me thing of the words to a song I know "On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand." When we cry out to God and wait for him, he does all of these things for us as well. No sinking sand - no quick sand. Solid ground.

The other lesson in all this is that, not only does David praise God, he recognizes that this is a testimony which will cause people to trust in God. Think, when we share the goodness of God and what he has done for us, it can cause others to trust him also. When others see changes in us, this is also testimony of what God can do.
Remember "All things are possible with God."

God bless you and have a great day!
